Electronic components have many performance parameters, among which the main ones related to mounting are:


(1) Length and width dimensions


Component shape length and width size difference of hundreds of times, the current small chip component 0402 (British 01005) is only 0.4mm×0.2mm, and some connector size can reach 120mm or more, so the structure of the paste head and the performance parameters of the nozzle requirements are very different, almost no one can meet all sizes of the component mounting.


(2) Shape height dimension


Contour height size is also an important mounting element, and the placement of the chip head position, the installation of the nozzle is related to the Z-direction stroke, and the large height of the corresponding components of the chip machine or the sticker head is determined.


(3) Component lead pitch


The lead pitch of the integrated circuit package will also put requirements on the mounting equipment, especially the narrow pitch (or fine pitch) package, for example, the QFP with a pitch of 0.3 and the BGA with a pitch of 0.4, all of which require the positioning degree of the placement machine.


(4) Component weight


The weight of the component is related to the nozzle structure and vacuum suction requirements of the SMT machine. A large weight of the component can be affixed to the SMT machine or the sticker head is certain, which will cause the mounting rate to decrease after exceeding.


(5) Surface quality of components


Among the performance parameters of surface mount components, the main factors that affect the mounting process are surface roughness and dimension error of height. This effect is mainly reflected in small components, namely 0603 and 0402 chip components. Seemingly identical small components, in fact, due to differences in production quality between different manufacturers, or differences in quality control between different batches of production from the same manufacturer, will cause differences in actual component dimensions and surface roughness, which not only affect the welding performance of components, but also affect the mounting performance.


The surface roughness affects the suction force of the vacuum system of the suction nozzle on the component, which will cause the failure of picking or the throwing phenomenon.


For stickers that do not have soft landing technology, dimensional errors in component height may cause pickup failure or damage to components, thereby affecting production efficiency and product quality. Technical details will be further discussed in the following sections.
